Teachers
- Daymara Ayala is a native speaker from Puerto Rico. She graduated from UAB majoring in English and minoring in Linguistics.
- Dawn Cotner is one of our advanced Spanish students. She will be teaching Spanish 1 in cooperation with our intern Norma Rodriquez (from Mexico).
- Miguel Angel Cuevas is a native from Puerto Rico. He has been teaching for 20 years.
- Melissa Mueller is from Athens, Alabama. She is an interpreter/translator and paralegal. In 2010, Melissa lived in Guatemala for a year where she learned Spanish by taking classes and total immersion.
- Luisa Cristina Perdomo is a native speaker from Venezuela.
- Norma Rodriguez is from Mexico.
Fall, Spring and Summer
We will offer the following group classes three times a year in Spring, Summer and Fall if we have minimum of 3 students that sign up. We also offer one on one tutoring for $60 (60 minutes).
We have syllabuses and placement tests for new students to be placed in all levels except Spanish 1. We use handouts for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2. Conversation classes 1 & 2 use "Spanish Conversation" by Jean Yates which you can purchase on your own here. We will pick another textbook for Conversation classes 3 and 4.

- Spanish 1: Learn the basics of reading, writing, and speaking Spanish! While this is an introductory course, this class is for those who are committed to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language. Studying material and practicing between classes is crucial for your success! At the end of the course, a test will determine if students are ready for Spanish Reading and Comprehension class.
- Spanish Reading and Comprehension: Practice what you learned in Spanish 1. Here we will be reading together as a class and see how much you understand in Spanish. Practicing pronunciation is crucial for learning Spanish. Here, students will practice their pronunciation and comprehension skills when it comes to Spanish short texts. We will use an online PDF of Spanish short stories. At the end of the course, a timed reading and comprehension test will determine if the students are ready for Spanish Conversation 1 or Spanish 2.
- Spanish Conversation 1: Further develop your vocabulary and confident of speaking Spanish! This class is for those who can understand common topics or subjects catered to learners but have difficulty responding timely. This class meets 1.5 hour each week for 10 weeks per semester. You must pass the Spanish 1 and Spanish Reading and Comprehension test to join this class.
- Spanish 2: Dive deeper into Spanish grammar and high vocabulary! This class is for students to learn advanced material concerning conjugation, pronouns, and other parts of the sentence beyond basic understanding. Studying and practicing in between classes is a must!
- Spanish Conversation 2: Continue your journey to fluency, with topics and situations aimed to help elevate your vocabulary. This class is for those who can speak comfortably in Spanish. This class meets 90 minutes per week for 10 weeks.

- Guided Practice - Spanish all levels - drop in, no registration, $10 cash per person: Saturday 1-2:30pm

Guided Practice - Spanish is 90 minutes of speaking practice with a different grammar selection or topic each week. Examples are ser vs. estar, when to use perfect or imperfect past tense, por vs para, vocabulary and sentences for when you are sick, daily routines (reflexive verbs) and planning a trip. The practice is guided by Dawn Cortner and suitable for all levels. Dates for next month's classes will be listed on this site at the end of the month. The cost is $10 (cash) per class. This is a drop-in as desired class, no reservations or future commitments required.
